There is something special about learning to use a sword.
Haidong Gumdo is a Korean sword martial art that combines traditional sword techniques with dynamic movement, discipline, concentration and physical training.
At Zone Martial Arts, our Haidong Gumdo classes give students the opportunity to learn genuine martial arts sword skills in a safe, structured and welcoming environment.
Whether you're fascinated by swords, interested in Korean martial arts, looking for a different way to get active, or simply want to learn something you don't get the opportunity to do every day, Haidong Gumdo offers a completely different martial arts experience.
And the best part?
You don't need any previous martial arts or sword experience to start.
What is Haidong Gumdo?
Haidong Gumdo is a modern Korean sword martial art inspired by Korean sword traditions.
Students learn how to correctly hold, move and control a sword while developing the footwork, balance and body mechanics needed to perform techniques effectively.
Training includes sword cuts, blocks, combinations, forms, footwork, partner drills and controlled cutting exercises as students progress through the system.
Beginners generally start with a wooden training sword, allowing them to safely learn the fundamentals before moving on to more advanced training.
It's a martial art that can look impressive from the outside — but once you pick up a sword and begin training, you quickly discover how much skill, control and concentration is involved.

More Than Just Swinging a Sword
Learning sword techniques is only one part of Haidong Gumdo.
Students develop coordination, balance, concentration, timing and body control while learning how to make each movement precise and deliberate.
Sword training encourages you to focus completely on what you're doing.
Your hands, feet, posture, breathing and sword all need to work together.
That makes Haidong Gumdo a fantastic activity for people who enjoy learning technical skills and challenging themselves to continually improve.
Develop Focus, Discipline and Confidence
Sword training requires concentration.
Students learn to slow down, pay attention to details and practise movements repeatedly until they become smoother, faster and more controlled.
For younger students, this can help develop focus, patience, confidence and discipline.
For teens and adults, Haidong Gumdo offers the opportunity to step away from everyday distractions and concentrate on learning a unique physical skill.
There's also a tremendous sense of achievement when a technique you've been practising finally comes together.
Traditional Martial Arts Meets an Amazing Workout
Don't be fooled by the sword — Haidong Gumdo can also provide a great physical workout.
Training involves repeated sword movements, footwork, stance work and whole-body movement that can help develop fitness, coordination, mobility, strength and endurance.
Because you're focused on learning techniques rather than simply exercising, training feels very different from a traditional gym workout.
You're getting active while developing a genuine martial arts skill at the same time.
Experience the Excitement of Cutting
As students develop the appropriate skills and experience, Haidong Gumdo can also include specialised cutting practice under instructor supervision.
Cutting allows students to test the accuracy, angle, speed and control of the techniques they have been practising.
It requires concentration and good technique rather than simply strength.
For many students, progressing from their first basic sword movements through to controlled cutting is one of the most rewarding parts of learning Haidong Gumdo.

No previous sword or martial arts experience is required.
